Philippines Emerges as Key Growth Market for MODENAS
Over 4,500 BRUSKY scooters exported in 2024; 14,000 targeted for 2025
Gurun, Malaysia – September 3, 2025 – Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn. Bhd. (MODENAS), a member of the DRB-HICOM Group of Companies, is accelerating its ASEAN expansion with the Philippines now standing out as one of its fastest-growing overseas markets.
The catalyst for this growth is the BRUSKY scooter, a refreshed version of the popular Karisma 125 EX, built in Gurun, Kedah and rebranded for the Philippines. More than just a scooter, BRUSKY has quickly become a trusted choice for Filipino riders who depend on two wheels for their livelihood and mobility.
The national motorcycle company’s expansion of the Philippine market is expected to generate a significant number of new jobs at its factory in Gurun, Kedah. This move will also support the expansion of the local supply chain while boosting the local as well as the nation’s economy, anchoring Kedah’s role in ASEAN’s industrial growth.
Export Growth Momentum
MODENAS’s export program to the Philippines began in 2023 with two test units sent for market trials. By 2024, MODENAS had exported 4,522 BRUSKY scooters through its partner Kawasaki Motors Philippines Corporation (KMPC).
In 2025, the company is targeting 14,000 units, a significant increase that signals growing demand and confidence in Malaysian-made products.
“This strong momentum is proof of the scooter’s relevance, reliability, and the trust our partners place in MODENAS,” said En. Roslan Roskan, Chief Executive Officer of MODENAS.
The Philippines is one of ASEAN’s most dynamic motorcycle markets, with 1.8 million units sold annually. Scooters account for 65% of that total, making them essential for commuters, students, and the country’s fast-growing delivery economy. The BRUSKY, tailored to meet these needs with input from KMPC, is well-positioned to serve this market.
Gurun: Malaysia’s Gateway to ASEAN Mobility
All BRUSKY scooters are manufactured at MODENAS’ Gurun plant in Kedah, which has an annual production capacity of 120,000 units on a single shift.
Building on the success of the BRUSKY, MODENAS is preparing to expand its Philippine portfolio with the KRISS 110 (to be marketed as Nimbus) in 2026, followed by the 150cc Supermoped.
Thanks to the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement which allows 0% import tax between Malaysia and the Philippines, MODENAS is able to offer products that are both competitive and accessible across the region.
“Together, we are proving that MODENAS can go beyond borders, and that the BRUSKY will ride proudly from Gurun to Manila, and beyond,” Roslan concluded.
